May 17, 2019S., is Monday, May 27, and is marked by parades, school programs, cemetery visits and other activities. Originally called Decoration Day, it began in the years after the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971. Here’s a sampling of Memorial Day-related events and programs in the Milwaukee suburbs. Pewaukee: The parade will step off at 10 a.m. May 27, beginning at Pewaukee High School, 510 Lake St., and led by American Legion Post 71. The parade will travel from Forest Hills Cemetery to West Wisconsin Avenue through the downtown area to St. Mary’s Cemetery. It will make five designated stops where wreaths or fresh foliage will be placed and taps will be played, followed by a reading: the cemetery by the school district, the Vietnam Memorial (next to the Pewaukee Public Library), Post 71, flags posted on the Pewaukee Lake front and the cemetery at old St. Mary’s. A car show is planned for 9 a.m. May 27 at Kiwanis Village Park, 325 Capitol Drive, sponsored by the Pewaukee VFW. Awards and trophies will be presented at 3 p.m. Food and beverages will be available for purchase. Entry forms are available from 4 to 8 p.m. weekdays at the VFW Post, 202 Clark St., Pewaukee. A ski show will take center stage at 5:30 p.m. at Pewaukee Lakefront Park, 222 W. Wisconsin Ave., sponsored by the Pewaukee Lake Water Ski Club. Dousman: Ceremonies are planned for 9 a.m. May 27 at Compass Point near Highways 18 and 67. Services will be held by the Dousman American Legion Post 405. A 20-30 minute ceremony will begin the day and will be followed by another brief ceremony at 9:40 at Three Pillars Masonic Nursing Home.
